Yes! I have often heard the complaint, "I made straight As before I got into nursing school!" Often there is the sense that one's life is completely engulfed by nursing school. It seems that one is always engaged in some activity associated with school--whether preparing for clinical, validations, exams--you name it. There seems to be an endless list of content to learn and limited time to learn it in. When one is not studying --there are careplans and drug lists to complete and learn. Let's not forget that there are families, friends, church, other activities, and people screaming for our attention also. How can it all be managed--is there truly life after nursing school?
I think it is important to do just like the participants in AA--take one day at a time. Realize that life is more manageable sometimes in small chunks rather than if you look at everything all at once. Know that there is life after nursing school. Look around you and see the people who have gone before you. One good way to do this, if you are not already working in healthcare, is to simply look at the graduate portraits at your school. Some of the people you will certainly know--if they could make it--so can you! Realize that nothing is ever as hard as it seems. Taking it one day at a time --you will look back and week 1 will be completed--then week 2 and so on. Before you know it, you will have completed that 15 week semester and you will have passed and survived another nursing course! Just keep putting one foot in front of the other and do what is directly before--you will make it and experience life after nursing school!
